PSYCHOLOGY GCE AS LEVEL (AQA) at Durham Johnston Comprehensive School

Course description

Psychology is about trying to understand people’s behaviour and experience. This is something we do every day but psychology uses a scientific approach which is more systematic and objective than our everyday approach. The research methods used to investigate behaviour will be considered and evaluated and students will practice skills of analysing and interpreting data on results they have gathered themselves. The course provides a grounding in five core areas of psychology. We will look at topics such as memory and eye-witness testimony in cognitive psychology, the development of attachments in young children and the effects of day-care in developmental psychology, stress and its management in physiological psychology, conformity and obedience in social psychology and different approaches to defining, explaining and treating abnormal behaviour in the psychology of individual differences. The course will involve learning about theories and studies and how to interpret and evaluate them. (Please note, studying psychology requires learning such evidence to use in arguments, it is NOT just discussing your own experience).
