Health and Social Care Level 3 Extended Diploma at Northumberland College

Course description

This course is suitable for all candidates who have prior knowledge, qualification and/ or experience of this subject area and would like progress to further studies in health and social care or work in the health and social care sector. All applicants must undertake an interview and apply for DBS clearance to demonstrate that they do not have a criminal background which might prevent them from working with young people or vulnerable adults.

Course content

You will study the health and social care sector in depth, learning about human growth and development, including biology and anatomy, sociology, phychology, communication skills, health promotion and spend considerable time volunteering in a range of placement settings as an integral prart of your course.  You will develop skills to meet the needs of diverse groups including children, adults with learning difficulties and the elderly.  Ideal if you would like a career working in healthcare support or social care services or to enable progression to professional careers such as nursing, midwifery, social work, physiotherapy or occupational therapy.

Entry requirements

You should have four GCSEs at grade C or above, incluidng English, or a merit/distinction in a full Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care or equivalent such as GCSE, plus good communication skiulls and strong motivation.  DBS clearance and references required.

Assessment

Your progress will be assessed by a range of methods including practical assessments, presentation, observations and written assignments. The course will be graded at a pass, merit or distinction.

Future opportunities

If you choose to continue your education you could progress within the College to the HNC in Heatlh and Social Care or specialise in an area such as counselling or apply to study a degree course at university such as nursing, midwifery or social work.  Althernatively you could apply for positions such as healthcare support worker, residential care worker, day care practiioner, domicilliary carer, occupational therapy assistant, physiotherapy assistant, social care worker, community support worker and many more.
