IT Level 3 Diploma at West Herts College

Course description

This course focuses on helping you develop your practical skills and understanding across the different technical aspects of IT. It is designed to help prepare and ready you for employment in an industry that is constantly changing and evolving.

Course content

This course is continually assessed using industry-based scenarios and small business projects. Your course materials and assessments are online and accessible from home, college – or anywhere else using mobile internet access.

The first year covers broadbased subjects including:

  • Computer systems

  • Programming

  • Mobile apps

  • Microcontroller technology - compact microcomputers designed to govern the operation of embedded systems in machines

  • Digital graphics

  • IT employability skills

  • IT technical support

  • Website production

  • Animation

  • Networking

In the second year you’ll choose a specialist path and follow a specific area of interest. Your options include:

Programming

Develop your skills in OOP, games design, interactive web programming and many other areas where program code is required.

Networking Pathway

Join us in our purpose-built networking lab for this opportunity to develop your skills with industry-standard networking and communication kit. Complete this and you could qualify with the internationally recognised Cisco Certified Network Associate award alongside your qualification.

Windows Systems

Acquire the essential skills you need as a first line support engineer, telephone consultant or computer technician. You will be proficient in most Microsoft products in the IT service industry and be able to maintain and support Windows-based systems.

Multimedia Pathway

Specialise in the expanding area of gaming platforms and technologies, plus game designs and web animation for interactive media. You may also have the opportunity to work on live projects with industry specialists.

In line with new Government policies, to make sure the UK is prepared for a world where almost every role will need an element of digital skills by 2023, this qualification will now factor in advanced and specialist digital skills. These skills are specifically required for specialist IT roles and will ensure you are prepared for demanding job roles.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs (A*-C) including English and maths, or a Level 2 diploma in ICT. You will also be required to attend a course introduction meeting.

Don't meet the grades? Take a look at the Level 2 Diploma in IT for a solid understanding of key areas in information technology, you will be able to progress to the Level 3 upon successful completion.

Future opportunities

The majority of our students progress to IT Foundation degrees here at West Herts College or on to Honours degrees at university. Going straight into work with a local IT employer is another option. Either way, this course creates a wealth of opportunities across the specialisms of programming and networks to multimedia.
