English Literature A Level at Audenshaw Sixth Form College

Course description

Year 12 - Curriculum Information

English Literature (Examination Board: AQA Specification B)

English Literature is a popular subject choice at A Level and has proved to be highly successful, especially with our most able students. The specification appeals particularly to those who enjoy reading widely and independently. Over the two year course, you will be invited to explore a variety of different texts and be encouraged to respond critically to a writer’s choice of form, structure and language.

AS Level

At AS, Unit 1 is entitled ‘Aspects of Narrative’ and introduces you to the central position of narrative in the ways in which literary texts work, involving many different aspects of literary representation. Unit 2 then builds on this new learning and introduces aspects of ‘Dramatic Genre.’ For the first three years of this specification, tragedy is the dramatic genre to be studied.

Year 13 - Curriculum Information

English Literature (Examination Board: AQA Specification B)

A2 Level

At A2, ‘Texts and Genres’ in Unit 3 teaches you to develop ideas on the significance of genre. Texts are grouped within the following categories: Elements of the Gothic and Elements of the Pastoral. In Unit 4, you will study a wide range of texts, the different ways of reading texts and critical ideas applied with discrimination to literary texts: this unit is aptly called ‘Further and Independent Reading’ and you are afforded the opportunity to do just that.

The course is designed to encourage informed and judgemental evaluation of a range of texts across genres and period. Students will be judged on their ability to communicate their knowledge, understanding and insight appropriate to their literary study.

Some typical texts studied include: ‘The History Boys’, ‘The Great Gatsby’, ‘Frankenstein’, ‘Dracula’, ‘Wuthering Heights’, ‘Othello’, ‘The Rime of Ancient Mariner’ by Coleridge and poetry by William Blake.
