English Language & Literature at Bishop Luffa School

Course description

If you love reading, writing, speaking and listening English Language and Literature should be the course for you. As well as studying the literary genres of novels, poetry and drama you will also explore a range of non-fiction texts and learn toanalyse spoken communication. The anthology of extracts linked to the exam is on the topic of Food Glorious Food.Coursework is based on the study of two novels written a hundred years apart. This course is an excellent preparation to any career involving written or spoken communication such as journalism, the law, teaching, the media, politics or medicine.

AS Level
At AS, the candidates study language and literature using an Anthology of literary and non literary texts alongside a chosen set of paired texts. Further study focuses upon the ways in which different writers have approached similar subjects and the ways in which language and style are affected by change over time and contractual variation.
A2 Level
At A2, the specification includes coursework as a means of applying the knowledge, understanding and insights gained from literary and linguistic studies to transform an original work into a different genre or sub-genre. Candidates demonstrate the use of appropriate terminology when analysing set texts. Drama texts are included at A2 Level.

Entry requirements

B grades in English and English Literature are required to study to subject at A Level.
