It is suitable for mature learners who are aged 19+ or 24+ who are volunteering or employed in an early years setting or school or have life experience or young children of their own. The College can help you find a placement if you have not already arranged one.

You will need to attend College for one day per week in term time and to either be working or volunteering two days per week with children aged 0-5.

Course content

During the course you will need to complete a minimum of 32 days with children within the 3-5 age group, 22 days with 2 year olds and at least six days with babies.

You will be observed by an Assessor at least once in each of these age groups and will complete a practical portfolio of evidence of your competence.

To pass the course you will need to pass all Units and your practical portfolio and complete the minimum required hours.

To achieve your licence to practice within the ratios as a full Level 3, you will need to have achieved GCSE English and Mathematics at Grade C or above (or older equivalent qualifications - but not Functional Skills).

Entry requirements

A minimum of four GCSEs at Grade C or above or equivalent. (You must have GCSE Grade C in either English or Mathematics [or both]).

As an adult learner, if you do not have both GCSE English and Mathematics you must enrol independently on the appropriate GCSE course to be able to start the Level 3 course. Bradford College has a range of Mathematics and English courses available for study both in an evening and during the day.

You will need to pass a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check to confirm your suitability to work with young children.
