Light Motor Vehicle Maintenance: IMI Level 2 Diploma at NESCOT

Course description

The Light Vehicle Maintenance IMI Level 2 Diploma provides students with an introduction to the technical skills needed for working in the motor vehicle repair industry.

Course content

Students will gain practical experience and the technical knowledge needed to work as a Service Technician carrying out maintenance/repairs on cars, vans and other light vehicles in garages, dealerships and maintenance depots. You will also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage.

Specialist course content includes:

  • the engine (including the fuel, ignition, cooling, lubrication and exhaust system);
  • Health and Safety;
  • Workshop practice;
  • Engines and transmissions;
  • Petrol and diesel engines
  • Ignition systems
  • chassis
  • electrical systems

All students are provided with an individual study programme to develop the skills needed to gain employment and succeed in the workplace. If you have not already gained both GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above you will receive additional help and support to retake these examinations.

Part of the course requires you to undertake a work experience placement and our Employer Hub will help you find a suitable position.

Entry requirements

  • Level 1 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, plus maths and English;
  • Minimum of four GCSEs Grade C or above in Maths and English and other Science related subjects for direct entry route.

You will be asked to attend an interview where your suitability, commitment and skills will be assessed. We will require a satisfactory reference from your last school or college tutor and you MUST have attendance record above 90% (actual attendance)


Students will be assessed via a mixture of practical assessments and online tests.

This course will prepare you for employment or more advanced study and training.

    • By Road:
      Nescot is located just off the A240 (Reigate Road), close to the junction with the A24 (Ewell Bypass).  The College is just five miles inside the M25 (Junction 9).
      There is a large, free car park for use by students and visitors.

      By Rail:
      Nescot is served by two mainline railway stations.
      Ewell East (Southern Railway)
      Ewell East is a two-minute walk from the College from a public footpath leading off Platform 2.  Trains run every half-hour from London Victoria.
      Ewell West (South West Trains)
      Ewell West, which is 15 minutes walk from the College, is on the main line from London Waterloo.
