Product Design - AS/A Level at Grŵp Llandrillo Menai

Course description

Shape the future – a course in product design offers a unique opportunity for you to identify and solve real problems by designing and making products with creativity and originality. By combining design principles with technological practical skills, you will design products which work, that people can get their hands on, play with, admire, tell people about and ultimately want as their own.

The course will show you how to understand product design and innovation; use complex engineering skills, computer aided design and computer aided manufacture and create your own product from an original concept to a completed, functional item.

Course content

This course is delivered as follows:

  • Group work
  • Classroom-based learning
  • Tutorial support
  • Educational visits
  • MOODLE (virtual learning environment)

Entry requirements

  • 5 GCSEs grade C or above to include Mathematics and English or Welsh (1st language)
  • Entry onto the full A Level is based on your performance at AS Level.

All places are subject to satisfactory interview.

Assessment

This course is assessed through a range of activities, including:

  • Practical and written assessments/assignments
  • Presentations and demonstrations
  • Portfolios of work
  • Performance and observation

Future opportunities

The Product Design course complements and a range of other courses such as art, physics or computing and can progress to a range of further and higher education studies and for future career paths. These include construction, architecture, industrial, environmental and interior design, product design and graphic design, art and design and fashion design.

Depending on the campus, students may be able to access elements of the programme in both English and Welsh through some programme learning materials being made available bilingually. Details will be provided to you at interview.
