Extended Project Qualification at Merchant Taylors' Boys' School

Course description

The Extended Project Qualification was introduced in response to concerns that A Level study was becoming regarded as too narrow by leading universities. The aim of the project is to create autonomous learners who are well prepared for university study and to enable those with genuine intellectual curiosity to study academic topics that lie outside of or beyond the A Level specifications, or that are truely cross curricular.

During the Lower Sixth, boys are briefed on the nature of the project and the advantages of providing evidence of independent study. Those who choose to begin a project submit a title and are then allocated a supervisor who will guide them through the research and drafting process. The final project, often delivered in the form of an extended essay coupled with a presentation to an audience of peers, is assessed within school before being submitted to AQA for moderation.
