Course content

What you will study

Two core units: - Enterprise in the Business World - Finance for Business - One mandatory unit - Principles of Marketing - Eight optional units - Promoting a brand - Principles of customer service - Providing business support - Recruitment and selection - Introducing retail business - Using business documentation - Business on line - Visual Merchandising In addition, the two Functional Skills of English and Maths will be an integral part of the programme or you can also study to improve your GCSE English and Maths. Maths and English are key elements of any full-time programme of study in College. If you do not already have a GCSE at grade A*-C in these subjects, you will need to attend sessions allocated on your timetable. These are varied and designed to cater for all ability levels. You will receive advice and guidance regarding the correct level for you. Skills in Maths and English will support your full-time course, assisting you with assignment writing, research, job applications, presentations, managing your own finances and interpretation of data, to mention just a few. They will also help you in the future. Most employers are looking for ability in these areas and the majority of university courses require you to have Maths and English GCSEs at A*-C. This is why the development of Maths and English is so important, whatever your field of study.

How you will learn

Through projects and assignments based on realistic workplace situations and activities. Learning methods will include classroom presentations, group work, research tasks, exhibitions and occasional visits and guest speakers.

Classroom based.

Entry requirements

You will need 4 GCSEs at grade A*-D (or new grade 9-3)  including English Language and Maths
OR
Level 1 Diploma at Merit and Functional Skills English and Maths at Level 1
 

Assessment

How you will be assessed

Both Finance and Marketing will be externally examined. The remaining nine units are internally assessed assignments.

 

Financial information

Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18 years old. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, residentials etc which are payable by all students.
Any student entered/registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and then withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any resit examination will incur a cost.

Future opportunities

 

Further study

Progression is to the Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Business. If you are in employment, NVQ in Business and Administration or other related vocational courses.

 

Career Opportunities

Employment at a junior level as an administrative assistant, investment administrator, receptionist, customer service assistant, sales representative, personnel assistant or telesales operator.

      In September 2013 we were proud to launch a new centre for post-16 learners. The new centre is a collaboration between Crofton Academy and Wakefield College and will offer post-16 learners in the Wakefield District an exciting new learning environment combining the strengths of both organisations.

      The new centre is housed in a brand new building within the grounds of Crofton Academy and staffed by a combination of Wakefield College and Crofton Academy staff.

      It offers a range of post-16 education opportunities, at various levels, open to all students from across the District.  It will provide a career-focused offer, giving young people the chance to continue with the next stage of their education locally, before going into employment or on to university.
