Health and Social Care BTEC Level 3 Diploma at Tavistock Community College

Course description

This course will be studied alongside one other BTEC or A level subject, such as BTEC Applied Science or AS Psychology. This course is equivalent to 2 A-Levels and has been created to give you a very broad understanding of the health and social care sector in a very practical way. Throughout the course you will undertake a number of research projects which will link into your practical placements which will enable you to apply your technical knowledge to realistic work situations. The core units of study include: • Development through life stages • Developing effective communication • Equality, diversity and rights • Physiology and anatomy • Health, safety and security • Personal and professional development • Sociological perspectives • Psychological perspectives • Professional Practices Over the two years you will spend a minimum of 200 hours on work experience. This will involve a number of work placements with elderly, children or vulnerable people.

Entry requirements

5 A* - C grades including a B grade in the chosen (or appropriate alternative) subject


All of the units of work are internally set by teaching staff and externally verified by a lead Assessor. Assessments are set on a half termly basis.

Future opportunities

This 2 year course focuses on the education and training for a Health and Social Care professional. It is wide ranging, preparing students for a variety of good quality jobs in any caring profession or offers the opportunity to apply for higher education as this course has UCAS points attached. Suggested Compatible Subjects: Sociology, Religious Studies, Applied Science BTEC, Biology, Psychology.
