Horticulture, Qualification in Land-Based Studies, Level 1 at Hadlow College

Course description

This course has a high practical element and is delivered making use of the excellent Horticultural resources. 

Students are able to access a range of additional learning support, based on need. A range of employability skills will be developed whilst on the course including practical skills, communication, and land-based specific knowledge, and development of
ICT skills.

The course is well supported through the use of virtual learning resources. Students will also get the opportunity to carry out a work placement block week in Broadview gardens and Court lane. On this one year course that encompasses various land-based subjects, students will study a range of units to develop specific skills and knowledge.

Course content

The following are examples of some of the topics students can expect to study within the course:

  • Safe and effective working practices
  • Develop performance in land-based industries
  • Work experience and employability skills
  • Transportation and maintenance of equipment and supplies
  • Maintenance of structures and surfaces
  • Planting and establishing plants
  • Carry out tractor operations
  • Functional skills/GCSE - English and maths

Entry requirements

You will need a minimum of two GCSEs at D-E / 3-2 Grade or equivalent (Entry level 3).
You should also have a keen interest in the subject and demonstrate a commitment to the curriculum area.


Assessment is through a range of styles including practical assessments, photographic and video evidence logs, workbooks and written assignments.

Future opportunities

Once completed students can progress onto a Level 2 qualification in Horticulture or gain employment in a range of industry careers.
