English Language and Literature GCE A Level (Marple Campus) at Cheadle & Marple Sixth Form College

Course description

The course offers you an interesting combination of English Language and English Literature. As well as studying a wide range of plays, poetry and novels you will also have the opportunity to develop your creative and analytical skills in your study of language. You should do this subject if you like writing for different audiences, love reading, and enjoy discussions

Course content

A Level (year two)

Unit Three: Comparative Analysis and Text Adaption

In this unit you will compare different types of texts including those from literary and non-literary contexts, and speech. You will also write a piece of your own work, based on the study of non-fiction writing.

Unit Four: Comparative Analysis through Independent Study

For this unit you will produce a 2500 word coursework essay. You will compare two texts: one will be a poetry text; the other will be a novel or a play.

Entry requirements

You must have achieved at least a grade C in GCSE English Language.

Assessment

At AS Level you will be assessed through two examinations. The coursework is completed during year two, and counts for 20% of the total A Level marks. The other A Level unit is assessed through examination.

• English Language and Literature goes very well with most other subjects – it complements all arts, humanities and sciences, especially at AS Level where you should choose a broader base.

• It is an extremely versatile subject which could take you just about anywhere, although a lot of English graduates veer towards teaching, journalism, publishing, advertising and the arts.

• Exam results are above the national average.

• There are lots of trips – not only to the theatre, but also cultural trips abroad.

• There is a good record of helping students get to Oxbridge.
