Biology A Level at Thomas Rotherham College (TRC)

Course description

Biology builds upon your knowledge from GCSE science, developing your enthusiasm for and understanding of Biological Science.

Course content

Development of Practical Skills

This covers the skills of planning, implementing, analysis and evaluation.


Foundations in Biology

This includes cell structure, biological molecules, including DNA and enzymes, followed by the study biological membranes, cell division, cell diversity and organisation.


Exchange and transport

This covers the structure and function of the gas exchange system, and animal and plant transport.


Biodiversity, evolution and disease

You will study communicable diseases, disease prevention and the immune system followed by biodiversity, classification and evolution.

 

Communications, homeostasis and energy

This module covers excretion as an example of homeostatic control, the nervous and endocrine systems, plant and animal responses to environmental change, followed by photosynthesis and respiration.

 

Genetics, evolution and ecosystems

You will study the control of cellular activities, genetics, genome manipulation, cloning and biotechnology.  This is followed by ecosystems, populations and conservation through sustainability. 

 

Study Visits

Field work, conservation and will include day trips. 

Entry requirements

GCSE Science 6,6 (with a 6 in Biology if taken separately.) Grade 5 Maths.

Minimum average GCSE score required 5.

Assessment

Written examinations and practical endorsement. 

Financial information

No more than £25 per day trip.

Future opportunities

Routes into Apprenticeships, Higher Education and / or Professional Careers include: Midwifery, Nursing, Medicine, Dentistry, Physiotherapy, Paramedic Practice and Micro Biology.

    • The College is situated on Moorgate in Rotherham, about a 15 minute walk from the centre of Rotherham.  Buses leave the central Rotherham Interchange every 10 minutes and the journey takes approx. 5 minutes. 

      We also run dedicated bus services to ease your journey to and from College.  See www.thomroth.ac.uk for details and route information. 

      The College also has on-site permit parking for students, with priority given to students with the greatest distance to travel.
