A-Level Chemistry at Cornwall College

Course description

Many of the products and items that we use in everyday life are a direct result of the application of chemistry. Pharmaceuticals, hair products, soap and cosmetics are just some of the items that have been made in chemical reactions using methods devised by research chemists. Wherever you look, you can see the work of the chemist - pure water for drinking, carbon dioxide for fizzy drinks, margarine for sandwiches and the refrigerants to keep food cool. Similarly, our transport system relies on fuel refined by chemists, who are responsible to ensure the smooth running of the engine and catalytic converters to prevent pollution. By studying Chemistry, you will discover the huge impact it has on the world around us. By the end of the course you should have a deeper understanding of the importance of Chemistry and how vital it is in understanding the way in which the world works.

Course content

Organic Chemistry - the study of carbon and its compounds e.g. alkanes, alkenes and alcohols. Organic compounds are structurally diverse and the range of applications of organic compounds is enormous. They either form the basis of, or are important constituents of, many products including plastics, drugs, petrochemicals, food, explosives and paints. They form the basis of almost all earthly life processes.

Inorganic Chemistry - the study of the compounds of all the elements other than covalently bonded carbon compounds. Topics include group 7 - the halogens, group 2 - the alkaline earth metals and the transition elements.

Physical Chemistry - they study of the physical properties of chemical substances in topics such as kinetics, equilibria, thermodynamics, redox reaction and electrochemistry.
