AS Level (Year 12)
Unit 1: An Introduction to physical education
You will study three theoretical areas in this section:
Anatomy and physiology: muscular/skeletal system; cardiovascular/respiratory systems; motion and
movement.
Skill acquisition: classification of motor skills; development of motor skills; information processing.
Contemporary studies: what is sport? sport and culture; funding; performance enhancement.
Assessment: 60%
Unit 2: Acquiring, developing and evaluating skills in physical education
This is the practical section.
You must select two sports from different activity profiles. These sports are assessed as coursework,
and again at moderation.
An analysis of a live performance.
Assessment: 40%
A2 Level (Year 13)
Unit 3: Principles and concepts across different areas of physical education
You will study three theoretical areas in this section.
Exercise physiology: energy systems; training principles; recovery; drugs.
Psychology of sport: individual aspects; group dynamics; mental preparation.
Historical studies of sport: origins of sport in the UK, their influence on today's sport.
Assessment: 70%
Unit 4: The improvement of effective performance and the critical evaluation of practical
activities in physical education
This is the practical section.
You must select one sport. This sport is assessed as coursework and again at moderation.
An analysis of a live performance.
Assessment: 30%

Entry requirements

5 A*-C GCSE grades.
