AS/A2 Music at Sandringham School

Course description

Course Aims:

To develop an appreciation of music through detailed analysis, performance and composition. To extend the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to communicate through music.

Course Structure:

AS: Students study three units

Unit 1:

Performing (40 marks – Teacher Assessed)

5-6 minutes solo performance

Unit 2:

Composing 1 (60 marks – Controlled Conditions)

Three-minute piece in response to a chosen brief and a CD sleeve note

Unit 3:

Developing Musical Understanding (80 marks)

2 hour written examination.

Section A: Listening. Questions based on set works

Section B: Investigating Musical Styles

Section C: Understanding chords and lines

A2: Students study three units

Unit 4:

Extended Performance (50 marks)

12-15 minutes solo recital

Unit 5:

Composition and Technical Study (80 marks)

Two tasks to be completed, either one composition and one technical study or two compositions or two technical studies.

Unit 6: Further Musical Understanding (90 marks)

2 hour written examination

Section A: Aural analysis

Section B: Music in context

Section C: Continuity and change in instrumental music

Instrumental Tuition:

Students are provided with 30 minutes of instrumental tuition in school or at St Albans Music School to support their performance studies.

 

Entry requirements

B at GCSE and Grade 4 or above in instrument/voice.
