History A Level at Carmel College, a Catholic Academy

Course description

We have designed the A-Level course to include fascinating periods in history to ensure a variety of topics from different time periods and from different counties. You will not just focus upon a narrow timeframe, but gain a broader and richer knowledge upon a number of historical areas.

History is an extremely respected ALevel. All universities welcome a good grade in history.

The study of history develops a variety of transferable skills valued by universities and employers alike. Skills such as:

  • understanding and analysing issues and events to a high level of competence
  • clear expression, both oral and written
  • putting forward ideas and arguments in a concise manner
  • gathering, investigating and assessing material
  • basing conclusions on research and generating ideas
  • organising material in a logical and coherent way

Course content

Topic 1: England 1485–1558: the Early Tudors

Areas include:

  • Henry VII’s ascendancy as king through battle and defeat of pretenders to the throne
  • His reign within England Relations with foreign countries, both friendly and hostile
  • The reign of Henry VIII including the role of Wolsey
  • The issue of his ‘divorce’ from Catherine of Aragon The break from Rome and the dissolution of the monasteries
  • War with France and Scotland
  • Enquiry into Edward IV and Mary Tudor (Bloody Mary)

Topic 2: Democracy and Dictatorships in Germany 1919–1963

Areas Include:

  • The impact of WW1 and the Treaty of Versailles
  • The state of Germany post WW1
  • The rise of the Nazi party and Hitler’s election as Chancellor
  • Hitler’s consolidation of power and the use of terror
  • Life in Nazi Germany, including the Hitler Youth, education and the role of women
  • Total War and the ‘final solution’ Post WW2 and occupied Germany
  • A divided Germany and its resurrection

Topic 3: Civil Rights in the USA 1865–1992

Areas include:

  • Struggle of citizens in the United States to gain equality before the law
  • Position of African Americans post 1865 after the American Civil War and the struggle for civil rights
  • The impact of the American government and World Wars in helping advance civil rights
  • The position of Native American Indians post 1865 and their struggle for equality
  • The advancement of American women’s role in society and their legal rights
  • Enquiry into the areas of civil rights in the ‘Gilded Age’ c.1875–c.1895, the New Deal and civil rights and the impact of Malcolm X and Black Power

Topic 4: Coursework

Students will complete a 3000–4000 word essay on a topic of their choice, which may arise out of content studied elsewhere in the course. This is an opportunity for students to actively research an historical topic which appeals to them.

Students may consider further study and pursue a history degree or a combined degree with another subject. Possible areas of employment that value history include:

We have a 100% pass rate. The majority of students achieve A*/A and B grades.
