Extended Diploma in Applied Science - Level 3 at South Thames College

Course description

This course is ideal if you want to study biological or related science courses at university or if you want a practical career in the sciences. There are plenty of practical activities to boost your understanding of scientific techniques including researching river pollution, measuring energy content in food and looking at a heartbeat under a microscope. You'll study aspects of biology, chemistry and physics as well as work on your English, maths and IT skills. Training in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) is vital in the UK and global economy today and the skills and knowledge you learn on this course could really get you ahead in the job market.

Course content

You'll study six mandatory units plus optional units such as:

  • Scientific investigation
  • Perception of science
  • Biochemistry
  • Biomedical Techniques.

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs A*-C including English, maths and science; OR a relevant Level 2 diploma at least at merit plus English and maths assessed by us to be at an appropriate level.

Assessment

A combination of coursework and exams.

Future opportunities

You could progress to degree or diploma courses in higher education. Employment opportunities include lab technicians or other practical scientific roles. You could progress to a degree or diploma courses in higher education including study in radiography, nursing, pysiotherapy, pharmacy and biomedical science. Job opportunities include lab technicians or other careers within the science and medical industry.
