Spanish at Hanham Woods Academy

Course description

If you are interested in languages and communication, and you enjoy learning about other cultures and ways of life, then this modern foreign languages course could be suitable for you. Similarly, if you are interested in the business world, in travel or tourism, or in journalism and the media, then you are also likely to find the course appropriate. There are a number of options in the course where you can choose your topic to suit your interests. Whether you want to use language for work, for further studying, training or for leisure, this course will equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge.

Unit 1: Listening, Reading and Writing. (2 hours) This unit draws upon four general topic areas. You will be expected to give relevant appropriate information, convey opinions, interact and respond to a range of questions from the following topics: 1. Media: Television, advertising, communication and technology 2. Popular culture: Cinema, music, fashion/trends 3. Healthy Living/ Lifestyle: Sport and exercise, health and well-being, holidays 4. Family and Relationships: Relationships within the family, friendships, marriage/ partnerships Listening Section: you will listen to a range of authentic recorded Spanish language and retrieve and convey information by responding to a range of English and Spanish language questions. Reading Section: you will read authentic Spanish texts and you will need to retrieve information by responding to a range of mainly Spanish language questions. Writing Section: you will be required to respond in Spanish to one question from a choice of three. There is one question on three of the four AS topic areas. (200 - 250 words).

Unit 2: Speaking Test (20 minutes preparation, 15 minutes test) Part 1 : Discussion of a stimulus card (5 minutes) You will have 20 minutes supervised preparation time during which you should prepare one of two cards given to you by the examiner. The cards will be based on the four topics for AS, i.e. Media, Popular Culture, Healthy Living/Lifestyle and Family/Relationships. There will be five questions printed on each card which will form the basis of the discussion Part 2 : Conversation (10 minutes) The Conversation will cover three of the four AS topics. You will choose the first topic in the Conversation and it can be any topic of your choice (3 minutes maximum) from the four AS topic areas. The remaining two topics in the conversation will be chosen by the examiner from the topics prescribed for AS, avoiding any overlap with the topic of the stimulus card discussed in Part 1 and with your nominated topic.

Entry requirements

Students should have achieved at least the equivalent of GCSE Grade B in the relevant language before taking this course.
