Media Studies A Level at Stanground Academy

Course description

Anyone interested in a career in the media or who just has a fascination for how we interact with films, television, newspapers, magazines and the internet.

 

Course content

Media Products (Component  01)

Students will explore how media products are used by institutions to construct different representations and how media audiences interpret these products.

Students will use aspects of the  theoretical framework to analyse and evaluate their own cross-media productions.

 

Media in a digital age (Component 02)

Students will explore and analyse the ideas and arguments from debates about the media.  These debates will be drawn from:

-a historical perspective

-the digital age

-global media

 

Making media (Component 03/04)

Students will practically explore the creation of three linked media products in a cross-media production.

Entry requirements

5 + A* to B grades at GCSE including grade 5 or above in English and grade C or above in either media studies or expressive arts – moving image.

Assessment

Component 01 (1 hour 45 minute (including 10 minute viewing time) written examination.  30% of total A level)

Component 02 (2 hour written exam.  40% of total A level).

Component 03/04 Non-exam assessment  (30% of total A level)

Future opportunities

– Higher Education: BA/BSC in music/film production, media studies, sociology,    psychology, art, teaching.

– Career opportunities in: journalism, teaching, social work, law, art, any kind of PR work or job where you have to present ideas.

Further information

Media Studies combines well with IT, drama, performing arts, music, sociology, psychology and English language complements subjects such as physics, mathematics, geography,
