Geography GCSE at Parliament Hill School

Course description

Geography is a constantly changing subject that allows students to develop fully their understanding of the world around them. By analysing how natural and human systems interact, students are able to analyse and interpret the often complex issues that the world faces today such as climate change, confl ict and a shortage of resources as a result of the rapidly expanding population. The topics covered explore contemporary local and global events and will let students appreciate the importance of the location of places and environments in shaping the spaces that we live in. Students will compare places in order to see how a range of factors mean that different areas of the world respond in different ways to a variety of events. Through the use of fi eldwork opportunities students will be able to take their knowledge and understanding and apply it to the real world in order to answer questions about specifi c locations and when set in the context of both global and local concerns. AQA geography B lays an appropriate foundation for further study of Geography or geographically related subjects such as Environmental Sciences, Economics, Geology and Earth Sciences as well as wide variety of other courses and career options – for further details see the ‘Where can geography take me?’ notice board. Tiers on entry Foundation and Higher Requirements for A level/ LaSwap Students must achieve a minimum grade B at GCSE. Description of course Geography AQA B is a new specifi cation written specifi cally for today’s students preparing for their working lives in the 21st century. The nature of the course is such that it gives an opportunity for the development of a wide range of research and presentation skills. As well as allowing students to develop their communication skills, ICT and GIS skills, interpersonal skills through debate and discussion and literacy and innumeracy skills. Year 10 Students begin by examining different types of hazards and analyzing the social, economic, political and environmental consequences of these for people in different parts of the world. Students then move on to looking at fresh water as a resource that is rapidly running out and thus creating confl icts at both a local and international level as well as having major consequences for human health and development world wide. Following on from this unit of study, students will complete the fi rst section of their controlled assessment task. Students will then move on to looking at the coastal environment and the pressures that are being placed on this fragile ecosystem by increasing human populations as well as future concerns such as climate change. Year 11 Students begin their study in Year 11 by attending a fi eldtrip in order to complete the data collection for the second section of their controlled assessment task relating to the coastal environment. Upon completion of this second task, students progress to examining the globalisation of industry and the consequences of this for both developed countries and on some of the world’s poorest people.
