Biology AS/A Level at The Maelor School

Course description

Biology is a subject in which time does not stand still. We look at the past: how animals, plants and other organisms have evolved. We study the present: how our bodies and those of other organisms work, right down to a microscopic level. Biology is also about the future, the cutting edge of technology: gene therapy, cloning.

As a science, practical skills are important and are examined along with biological theory. Students will learn microscopy skills and use these to good effect from the very outset. The wide range of content in the course prepares students for specialising in the various sub-disciplines of Biology (eg. Microbiology) at university or to take a general Biology course and specialise later.

Biology is an extremely popular subject in Maelor Sixth. It is a required subject for application to many university courses, including medicine, dentistry and veterinary science, as well as the biological science sub-disciplines and other courses related to the environment.
