Applied Science BTEC Level 3 at Oakbank School

Course description

This is a level 3 qualification and is broadly equivalent to one or 2 A Levels.

In year 12 you will cover Core units, these include;

- Fundamentals of Science
- Working in the Science Industry
- Scientific investigation
- Scientific Practical techniques
- Perceptions of Science – how science affects us in everyday life.

Including some essential application of numbers that scientists have to understand and use in the work situation.

In year 13 you will study further core modules that cover the fundamental concepts and practical skills of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Entry requirements

Merits in BTEC Applied Science, or Grade C in Core and Additional Award Science. Candidates with grade D or Pass will be considered after consultation


These are 2 year courses, made up of a number of units.

Each Unit has 4 tasks, and evidence has to be produced for each task in order to receive a pass, merit or distinction grade. An overall grade will be given for each unit.

All units in Year 12 must be passed to continue into Year 13.

Evidence can be in the form of formal and informal reports, presentations, laboratory notebooks, information posters and leaflets.
