Course description

Year 12 ContentThe AS course has three units:Unit 1: Exploration of Drama and TheatreIn Unit 1 you will study two plays through a series of practical workshops. You will think about the ways the plays are put together, and examine what you have to do to bring them to life on stage.Unit 2: Text in PerformanceIn Unit 2, you will perform a role in a production of a play. You will take part in workshops that will help you to develop your performance or design skills. You can specialise as an actor, lighting, set, mask or costume designer.Unit 3: Text in ContextIn Unit 3 you will extend your study of the text in performance by exploring the context in which the play was written, the relevance of the play today and what it means to you as an actor or designer. You will also develop your skills in writing about plays you have been to see.Year 13 ContentThe A2 course has three additional Units.Unit 4: DevisingIn Unit 4 you will work in group to devise your own piece of drama for presentation. This will be based on a stimulus set by your teacher.Unit 5: Text in PerformanceIn Unit 5 you will study, in-depth, another play, working towards a performance of key scenes in small groups. Your aim will be to demonstrate the essence of your interpretation in a workshop performance.Unit 6: Text in ContextIn the final unit, you will study two further plays. The first play will be from the point of view of a director and is a text set by the exam board. The second play will be a Shakespeare and must include seeing a contemporary production.

Entry requirements

Subject specific entry requirements may apply but as a minimum you should provide 7 GCSEs grades A* - C. Please see our website for full admissions criteria. Students require a grade B or above in Drama and English Language GCSE
