Sociology - As and A2 at Downend School
If you have a lively and enquiring mind and enjoy debating and researching topical and controversial issues then this is the course for you. Sociology will provide you with the opportunity to study subjects that are relevant to your life and experiences. Sociology is the study of societies and how they shape people’s ideas, their behaviour and their cultures, and how in turn, people interact together and shape their societies.
In Year 12 you will carry out a variety of research projects into the topics detailed below. You will also partake in lively class debate surrounding the issues that affect your family life and education. During Year 1 of the course (AS) you will study 3 modules:
Module 1 Families and Households
Module 2 Education
Module 3 Sociological Methods
During the A2 course you will increase your depth of understanding of core sociological issues and develop an understanding of key issues and debates surrounding crime in society and the development and impact of religion today.
During Year 2 of the course (A2) you will study 3 modules:
Module 1 Religion
Module 2 Theory and Methods
Module 3 Crime and Deviance
Sociology sits well with other social science courses such as Psychology, Health and Social Care and Government and Politics. Students will develop a wide range of transferable employability and higher education skills, including; research skills, independent study skills, essay writing and analytical skills. We guarantee any student taking this subject will have an opinion on most things by the end of the course.
AS: Grade B in GCSE English/History
A2: Grade D in AS Sociology
