Course description

Studying English Literature will not only give you a wide variety of career options but also improve your communication skills and broaden your appreciation of literature.

We have a very popular department that has teachers with an extensive range of experience and interests.

Students are invited to experience a number of workshop opportunities and enrichment activities that include theatre visits to London and the opportunity to take part in visits to Stratford as well as watching modern interpretations of classic plays.

Course content

This is a two year A level course which consists of three broad topics:

(a) Love Through the Ages

(b) Texts in Shared Contexts

(c) Independent Critical Study – Texts Across Time Within these topics, poetry, prose and drama texts are studied. The exam board provides lists of texts to be studied. These may change from year to year.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs A-C grade including Maths and English

We prefer students to hold a Grade B in GCSE English Language and English Literature.

Assessment

There are two exams at the end of the course, worth 40% each. The Independent Critical Study is worth 20%, and consists of an extended essay, assessed by teachers and moderated by the examination board. (If students wish, the subject can be studied for one year only, in which case two exams are taken, which are worth 50% each). Assessment in the examinations is through the writing of essays, and there will be plenty of opportunity to practise and perfect this skill during the course.

Future opportunities

English Literature can be studied at university either by itself, or alongside other subjects. Possible related careers include teaching, journalism and other information/media related careers. All careers that require employees to hold a degree are open to English graduates.
