French & German - As and A2 at Downend School

Course description

AS/A2 – understand and respond in speech and writing to spoken language/written language. Develop spontaneous speech to conversational level. Show knowledge of and apply accurately the grammar and syntax prescribed in the specification. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of topics including the media, popular culture, healthy living/lifestyle, family/relationships at AS level, and environment, the multicultural society and contemporary social issues at A2. At A2 level, study in depth 2 cultural topics such as an author or director from the target language country.


Listening, reading, transfer of meaning and writing examination.

Speaking – Short conversation with starter questions on stimulus card on the topics covered. General conversation on the other topics covered.


Listening, reading and writing examination.

Speaking – discussion following textual stimulus on one of the topics studied. Conversation on the 2 cultural topics studied.

Group work, pair work, individual work, teacher led and independent learning. Combines well with any subject, especially English, History, other languages but also Science.

Entry requirements

AS: Grade B in either GCSE French or German

A2: Grade D in either AS French or German
