Course description

INTRODUCTION

Studying a modern foreign language is not just about speaking the language. A language student is exposed to a different society with unique cultural aspects and customs. Studying a language gives an individual the confidence to put forward a point of view in a structured and animated way and develops communication, interpersonal, analytic and interpretative skills. Two years of language study can enhance a curriculum vitae and will catch the eye of anyone reading a job or university application. Studying a language could therefore lead to a top job or a place on a university course.

SKILLS NEEDED

In order to succeed at both AS and A Level a student will need to demonstrate considerable linguistic ability at GCSE level, be hard working and committed. Other requirements are a sound understanding of the basic grammar taught for GCSE, the ability and the will to communicate in both the written and the spoken language, the ability to learn a wide range of vocabulary, and a natural curiosity about the language and the cultures of other people. Ideally an AS student will have taken all higher tier papers at GCSE.

Course content

SUBJECT CONTENT

Grammar

Students will study the grammatical system and structure of the language. The end of course exams will test their use of accurate grammar and structures appropriate to the tasks set, drawing from the lists in the specification.

AS students study one book or one film.

A level students study two books or one book and one film.

Individual research topic

A level students conduct individual research on a subject of personal interest, relating to the country or countries where the language is spoken.

TEACHING METHODS

Students are taught by one teacher in Spanish. Whole class teaching, class discussion, group and pair work and individual study contribute to the delivery of the course. Students will also have the opportunity to consolidate class work and develop their oral skills and confidence in speaking the language by working with the Foreign Language assistant for half an hour each. Students are encouraged to listen to the radio in the target language, to read articles in newspapers, magazines and on the internet to develop language awareness and knowledge of culture within the countries where the language is spoken.

Entry requirements

To achieve at least 6 grades, A* to C, at GCSE, including English language and mathematics.

To achieve at least GCSE grade B in the chosen language. 

Students are required to have a reference/report which clearly shows that they are suitable to undertake academic studies at A Level standard.

Assessment

METHOD OF ASSESSMENT

AS level - three examinations:

Two written papers - one on cultural themes - 40% & one on the book/film - 30% Oral – discussion of themes - 30%

A level - three examinations:

Two written as at AS level Oral - discussion of one theme plus individual research project worth 30%

Future opportunities

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

There are three types of career opportunities with languages:

  • A career such as translating, interpreting or teaching where your language skill is the prime element.
  • A career in which your language is secondary to another discipline such as the travel industry or import or export, sales and marketing.
  • A career which will be open to you because you have demonstrated that you have the intelligence and the skill necessary to learn a language. Many linguists may, for example, begin careers in IT, the law, the media, accountancy, any career within the EU or UN institutions, M15, M16 as well as VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas) or even the Red Cross International.

At university, languages can be combined with the study of a wide range of subjects at degree level; such combinations as languages with English, geography, politics, history, business studies or even a brand new language. An added advantage to developing your language skills is, of course, that you are able to communicate in your foreign language should your employers require it; this can bring you the opportunity of foreign travel and contact with others abroad, whichever field you choose to work in.
