Make-Up Artistry Level 3 Diploma at Aylesbury College

Course description

This programme has been specifically designed to develop your practical skills to an advanced level through a variety of techniques in the following units: media, fashion, photographic, special effects and camouflage make-up, creation and application of prosthetics and postiche and how to perform the complex skill of airbrushing. In addition, there will be the opportunity to complete the Level 3 Award in Creative Hairdressing Skills.

Course content

This is a practical based course and you will receive ongoing assessment on your practical skills. There will be theory which underpins the practical knowledge. In addition to your study programme, you will be required to undertake work experience within the Make-Up industry and keep a portfolio of photographic evidence.

Entry requirements

5 GCSE’s at C including English and Maths or a Level 2 Beauty or Hair qualification and a GCSE grade C in English or Maths. Ideally candidates will be ages 17 and over.


You will carry out a range of practical assessments. You will collate theoretical evidence in the form of photographic portfolio evidence, assignments, projects, tests, demonstrations and presentations.

Future opportunities

Upon completion of the level 3 Diploma, you may wish to progress onto a higher education courses, such as HNCs and HNDs in Special Effects Make-up or Production Arts. Alternatively you could progress into an exciting career in the media and entertainment industry.

Make-up Artistry is mainly self employed work in one of the following areas: film, television, theatre, concerts, photographic sessions or fashion shows. It can be long hours but lucratively paid.
