Course description

Qualifications:

Year 1 - City & Guilds Diploma in an Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Industry Level 1 (Hairdressing Route)

Year 2 - City & Guilds Diploma in Women's Hairdressing Level 2 (VRQ)

Course outline:

This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in hairdressing that would like to learn the skills needed to get started in the industry. The course covers key hairdressing skills including:

Assessment:

The course is taught using both practical and theoretical methods in the classroom and our dedicated salon. You will study theory and practice techniques and your IT skills will also be developed. You will be assessed through observation of practical performance, assignments and written tests.

  •  Twisting and plaiting
  •  Themed face painting
  •  The art of colouring hair
  •  Shampoo and Condition Hair
  •  Colouring hair using temporary colour
  •  Styling womens’ hair

  •  Create a Hair and Beauty image

Year 2

  •  Health and Safety
  •  Fulfil Salon Reception Duties
  •  Advise and Consult with Clients
  •  Cut Hair using Basic Techniques
  •  Shampoo and Condition Hair and Scalp
  •  The Art of dressing Hair
  •  Colour and lighten Hair
  •  Working in the Hair Industry
  •  Promote products and services to clients in a salon
  •  Perm and Neutralise Hair
  •  Provide scalp massage services
  •  Display stock to promote sales in the salon

 

Assessment:

Into the future:

You will gain a nationally recognised qualification enabling you to work in a hairdressing salon as a junior stylist.

For students who achieve particularly well on this course, there may be the opportunity to study for a level 3 qualification in Year 2 of the course.

After you have completed this course, you could go on to work in the Hair industry, or move onto a higher level vocational qualification.

Applications should be submitted as soon as possible. All applicants will be invited to discuss the course/courses applied for with a senior member of staff to ensure students are selecting the right course/courses. To help with the process we will also look at recent student reports and the attainment information provided by subject staff. Any offer of a place at North Durham Academy may well be dependant on students achieving specified GCSE grades.

 

Entry requirements

16+ Curriculum Pathways

The overall grades each student achieves may effect the combination of A Level and BTEC subjects they can choose. Curriculum pathways have been devised to help students choose the combination of courses which best match their achievements at the end of Year 11:

High Achievers

6 separate GCSE at B or above, with the majority at A* to B - including Maths and English.

4 A Level courses

Advanced

5 separate GCSE at C or above including Maths and English

3 or 4 A Level courses which may include a BTEC subject

Advanced Vocational

5 GCSE passes at C or above including Maths or English

Vocational BTEC subjects with stronger candidates also able to choose an AS Level subject

Professional

4 GCSE passes at grade D or above – preferably including English or Maths

Level 1/2 Motor Vehicle or Hairdressing.
