Course description

Year 12 ContentIn Year 12 students will investigate media in order to reach an understanding and basic evaluation of how meanings and responses are created. The key concepts of media forms and conventions, institutions, audiences and representations will be explored through theoretical and practical work in audio-visual, print based and ICT based media.Unit 1: Investigating MediaStudents will study the contemporary media landscape through analysis of a variety of media products, platforms and technologies. This unit is assessed by a 1 hour 30 minutes written exam.Unit 2: Creating MediaThis is a coursework unit. Students will produce two linked production pieces taken from two of the three media platforms studied in Unit 1 and a 1,500 word written evaluation reflecting on both pieces.Year 13 ContentAt A2, students are encouraged to examine the media in a less formulaic way and demonstrate, develop and formulate their understanding of the media and its influential role in today's society as well as debating Major Contemporary Media Issues.Unit 3: Critical PerspectivesStudents study a pre-set topic area starting with Representations and the Impact of New/Digital Media. This unit is assessed by a 1 hour 30 minute written exam.Unit 4: Research and ProductionThis is a Practical and Written coursework unit. Students undertake research into a personally chosen media text or theme and produce a linked production piece.

Entry requirements

Subject specific entry requirements may apply but as a minimum you should provide 7 GCSEs grades A* - C. Please see our website for full admissions criteria. Students require a grade B or above in English Language GCSE and, if taken, Media GCSE. Students who have not studied Media will require a B grade or above in a related subject such as Art or History GCSE
