BTEC Music (Subsidiary Diploma) at St John's Catholic School & Sixth Form College - A Catholic Academy
The course is suitable for anyone with an interest in Music performance, Composition or Music Management. The course is vocational and therefore completely coursework based. There is a lot of independent study required and candidates need to be able to research around the areas of study.
Students need to show a willingness to embrace all aspects of the course in order to develop their leadership skills as well as their musical skills. There are a number of external agencies involved in the delivery of the course to enhance learning. If you enjoy performing music and learning to play an instrument or have a desire to work in the music industry then this course is for you!
All students cover 6 units of work over the 2 years. All students must complete the two compulsory units – Performance Techniques and Working and Developing as a Musical Ensemble. The other 4 units are selected from the list below in accordance with the students' area of strengths/interests:
- Musical Composition
- Music Project
- Solo Musical Performance
- Music in the Community
- The Freelance Music World
Each unit is graded using specific criteria and students are awarded a Pass, Merit or Distinction for each.
It is not essential to have studied Music at GCSE or BTEC level 2 in order to take this course, however it would be an advantage. Several topics in the course are developments of work covered at GCSE Music and BTEC Level 2, but most are new areas. An interest in performing music and the ability to play an instrument at a basic level is essential.
