Course description

This course offers you the opportunity to experience working with a wide range of art and design processes. This involves developing the skills of painting, drawing, mixed media, graphics and three dimensional design as well as exploring the new technology such as digital photography and image manipulation. The course also aims to equip you with an understanding of the design process and study skills required to achieve success in the future.

The course also aims to equip you with an understanding of the design process and study skills required to achieve success in the future.The Media and Performing Arts department is equipped with a variety of specialist facilities and equipment including art and design studios, as well as Apple Mac Graphics and Multimedia workshops. The Art and Design department has an excellent success rate, whose students often progress through to university. The Learning Resources Centres are designed to help students by offering information technology facilities, workshops and libraries.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs grade D or above. BTEC Introductory Certificate or Diploma, appropriate NVQ Level 1, or another relevant Level 1 or Foundation qualification. You will have a pre induction interview/assessment to make sure this is the right level for you.

Assessment

This course is assessed by continual assessment, rather than exams. Students research, plan and produce practical work. All assignments have interim assessment points, this is when the lecturer assesses the work and shows the student how to improve their grades. Students requiring any support in producing written work, organising themselves or managing their time can access our academic mentors.

Future opportunities

With a First Diploma in Art and Design you can progress on to a range of courses, including BTEC Extended Diplomas in Art and Design, Photography and Interactive Media. All students receive careers advice from their tutor and student services.
