Art, Design and Media ABC Level 3 Foundation Diploma at Birkenhead Sixth Form College

Course description

The Foundation Diploma in Art, Design and Media is ideally suited to aspiring artists and designers looking to develop the enhanced creative and personal skills that are necessary for transition into higher education or employment.

The course is designed to develop your knowledge, confidence and independence through exploration and discovery. It is a broad and exciting  course that will demand commitment, determination and perseverance – qualities essential for success in all professional fields of Art & Design.

Course content

The course begins as a series of short thematically driven projects in the mandatory areas of drawing, painting, textiles, fashion, graphics, 3D Design and sculpture. This  first part of the course will enable learners to examine the extent of their own skills and aptitudes and explore different problem solving methods.

For the second stage of the course the learner will negotiate a personal programme of study, with a view to developing a subject specific portfolio of work and making a successful application for Higher Education.

In the third stage of the course the learner will produce a final project and course grade will be determined by the quality of this final work. There is comprehensive programme of contextual studies and use is made of local galleries and museums. There will also be an over night study visit to London.

Entry requirements

Satisfactory interview – a portfolio of art/design work will be presented at interview and interviewees will be expected to discuss their initial ideas with respect to a career in Art & Design.

Prospective learners should be a minimum of 18 years of age; have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, which should include English Language and Art & Design; and a minimum of 2 A Levels.

Written communication is a mandatory aspect of this course. Learners will be expected to produce annotated sketchbooks and critical studies essays. Learners must also have an ability to meet deadlines and take responsibility for their own learning.


There are 3 formal assessment points during the course, in addition to frequent individual and group tutorials. The course is comprised of units of learning, which includes taught time, independent study, access to resources and assessment. There are specified learning outcomes and assessment criteria that will be shared with you as the course progresses. You will also have a personal tutor who will provide a comprehensive programme of guidance to ensure your success in applying for Higher Education.

Financial information

Students who are 18 on September 1st 2015 will not be liable for course fees. Successful internal applicants who are 19 or over on 1st September 2015 will be given a bursary which will limit their course fees to £800. External Applicants who are 19 or over on 1st September 2015 will be charged the full course fees of £4000. All students will be expected to pay for or provide the course materials and equipment for this course.
