Design and Technology: Textiles A level at Heathcote School & Science College

Course description

If you're inspired by fashion, theatrical costume or interior design, Textiles at A Level will provide you with the specialised knowledge and skills to go on and study Textiles products at university. 

Course content

The theory component of this course focuses on materials, components, fabric properties, fibre classification and smart materials. You will also study the history of design, the role of the designer, and ethical and moral design. You will design and manufacture a Textiles product, whilst developing creative and technical skills such as pattern drafting and tailoring. 
The course is split into 4 units. Units 1 and 2 are studied at AS level and units 3 and 4 at A2. 
  • Unit 1: Materials, Components and Application
  • Unit 2: Learning Through Designing and Making
  • Unit 3: Design and Manufacture
  • Unit 4: Design and Making Practice 
In studying this course, you will develop your capacity to design and make products, and appreciate the complex relationships between design, materials, manufacture and marketing. 
You will learn by:
  • Designing and manufacturing a high quality Textiles product. 
  • Producing sketch books showing research, development, experimentation and refinement. 
  • Improving knowledge of the arts and design. 
  • Working to deadlines and studying the theory of Textiles. 
  • Educational visits. 
  • Developing a portfolio 

Entry requirements

To study Design and Technology: Product Design (Textiles) you will need 5 or more GCSEs at A*-C including English, Mathematics and Textiles GCSE. 

Future opportunities

Textiles A Level can lead to employment, or university study, in a variety of fields including:

  • interior design,
  • fashion,
  • costume  
  • other Textiles product design.
