Course content

This course covers of a wide range of topics including:

Core units:

  • Working Practices in Engineering
  • Using and Interpreting Engineering Information
  • Applied Electrical and Mechanical Science
  • Mathematics for Engineering Technicians


Specialist units:

  • Quality Control and Measurement in Engineering
  • Selecting Engineering Materials
  • Using CAD Techniques in Engineering
  • Engineering Marking Out
  • Secondary Machining Techniques.


You may also choose to study for a GCSE to increase the number of your qualifications, or to resit a previous GCSE subject to improve a grade. To enhance employment opportunities the course may also have additional qualifications built into the programme.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade D or above including English and Maths or NVQ Level 2 in Engineering and successful completion of Functional Skills at an appropriate level


The course is continuously assessed through written and practical assignments and tests.

Financial information

If you are aged 16-18, tuition and registration fees are free. 
If you are aged 19 or over, tuition and registration fees are payable at the start of each year of study; please ask for details.
If you are aged 24 or over, you may be eligible for a Student Loan to assist with your fees; please ask for details.

Future opportunities

This course is a recognised route into a Level 3 course or employment, including an Apprenticeship.
