Further Mathematics A Level at Settle College

Course description

This course is currently (2014-2015) studied at AS level for Y12 and will continue at A2 for this cohort. From September 2015 it will be offered at AS for Y13 only. It is an extra qualification intended for students with a particular interest in mathematics (or a related subject).

Course content

Course Description (AS)
Students will study three units of work. The units are negotiable but would typically be: Further Pure Maths 1, Statistics 1 and Mechanics 1.

Course Description (A2)
Students continuing with the A2 course will be expected to have achieved a sound grade on the AS level. Students will study three units of work, normally these would be: Further Pure Maths 2, 3 or 4, Statistics 2 and Mechanics 2.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade C or above, which must include: GCSE Grade A in Maths and aptitude for the subject


Both AS and A2 are assessed by examinations in May/June. A re-take opportunity is currently available, in June of Y13, for units first taken in Y12 (AS). There is no coursework requirement

Future opportunities

A qualification in Further Mathematics stands out on a curriculum vitae for years to come, as it is very rare and illustrates a particularly high ability in Mathematics. It is useful for progression particularly in maths related subjects Higher Education course.
