Course description

This dynamic new course will provide you with the skills and abilities to work at a supervisory level, manage or own your own retail outlet. Fashion retail is one of the fastest growing sectors in the UK offering challenging, exciting and rewarding careers.

Course content

You will study the following 7 mandatory units:

  • The evolution of the fashion retail marketplace
    • In this unit you will actively explore and experience the current fashion retail market in order to develop their knowledge and understanding of fashion retail industry, it’s on going challenges and responses
  • Understanding customer service in the retail sector
    • The purpose of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge and understanding of retail customer service. It focuses on standards of customer service and covers how customer complaints and problems are resolved in retail businesses.
  • Understanding the handling of customer payments in a retail business
    • The purpose of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge and understanding of the cashier’s responsibilities in terms of processing payments at the payment point within retail Businesses.
  • Understanding the fashion retail business
    • This unit provides you with the opportunity to explore the similarities and differences between fashion retail businesses. You will examine the ways in which internal factors – such as the company’s ownership, location and organisational structure - as well as external factors, can affect the performance and viability of a fashion retail business
  • Understanding the retail selling process
    • The purpose of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge and understanding of the retail selling process. It focuses on the techniques used for identifying and meeting the needs of customers in retail businesses.
  • Preparing to work in a fashion retail store-based environment
    • The purpose of this unit is to provide you with experiences that are typical of a fashion retail shop floor environment in preparation for practical experience within a store-based environment.
  • Preparing for personal progression in the fashion retail sector
    • The purpose of this unit is to encourage learners to consider their own progression intentions within the Fashion Retail sector. You will develop the skills and knowledge necessary to participate in the recruitment process and will consider the need for further personal development

  • Visual merchandising for fashion retail
  • Personal shopping and styling for fashion retail
  • Promotional activities in fashion retail
  • Fashion history, culture and trends
  • Fashion history, culture and trends
  • Understanding fashion trends and forecasting
  • Understanding retail consumer law
  • Understanding the control, receipt and storage of stock in a retail business
  • Graphic design ideas and concepts

Entry requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSEs with the following grades: English 3 and maths at 2 or above, and 2 other GCSEs grade 3 or above.


With assignments based on realistic workplace situations. You will have work experience which is used for assessment purposes.

Financial information

As a full time student you should not need to pay any course or examination fees (under 19).

There may be a cost for equipment, educational visits, printing etc.

  • BTEC Extended Diploma in Business level 3 (2 years),
  • Apprenticeship in Retail level 3,
  • Apprenticeship in Customer Service level 3.

You could enter employment within the retail industry at a supervisory level.
