Painting and Decorating Level 1 Diploma at Wirral Metropolitan College

Course description

This course will provide you with a basic introduction to painting and decorating to enhance your practical skills.

The Level 1 Diploma in Painting and Decorating is designed to prepare people to enter the industry in their chosen craft.

Course content

The course has been specifically developed for delivery in a training environment using simulated conditions, and the test(s) are based on the student showing what they can do as an individual through the completion of all the requirement of the qualification.

The course will enable you to study a wide range of skills, all of which will help you on your chosen career pathway, moving into employment or further training.

You will get the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised vocational qualification linked to your chosen career. Also, this programme will help you to improve your English, maths, and ICT, plus develop the personal and social skills which employers look for.

You will be given support and guidance throughout your learning journey and your progress will be reviewed with you regularly.

Students will complete the following units for both practical and job knowledge:

  • 201: Health, safety and welfare in construction
  • 101: Principles of building, construction, information and communication
  • 116: Erecting and dismantling access equipment and working platforms
  • 117: Preparing surfaces for decoration
  • 118: Applying paint systems by brush and roller
  • 119: Applying foundation and plain papers
  • 120: Producing specialist decorative finishes

Entry requirements

Action planning - Students will work with their tutors to Action plan. Students are expected to know when they are ready to be assessed.

Information Technology - It would be helpful if you have used a computer before starting the course but if you have not got these skills you will be given a chance to learn.

Manual dexterity and physical stamina - The course requires physical fitness. You will need to lift and use tools and handle materials.

Communication skills - An ability to communicate one to one e.g. with a tutor or customer and in a group as part of a discussion.

Reading: The course material is presented in a variety of resources e.g. handouts, work books, electronic (Moodle). Students need an ability to read and understand this literature. Technical language will be taught on the course.Writing: Students will need to produce some written assignments. Due to the technical language and the use of course literature it is recommended that entrants should have a minimum of Entry 3 for this course.

Maths - Whilst a high level of maths is not required students will need to understand the four rules of number, metric measurements and superficial areas. It is recommended that entrants should have a minimum of Entry 3 for this course.

Before starting your course, you will take assessments in English and maths to make sure that you are working at the right level.

If English is not your first language, you may need an assessment before enrolling on this course.


To gain the diploma, students must pass a series of practical assessments covering preparation of surfaces, paint application, wallpapering and specialist decorative finishes.

There are also seven multiple choice theory tests corresponding to each unit of the qualification as listed above.

Financial information

Students will be expected to supply their own steel toe-capped footwear, white bib & brace overalls, a note pad and pen. A full City and Guilds workbook is provided for each student.

Future opportunities

Successful completion of this course may mean you can progress to Level 2 Diploma Painting & Decorating or NVQ level 2 Painting & Decorating (if you gain employment).
