Motor Vehicle Engineering Level 3 at Northampton College

Course description

A Level 3 Extended Diploma is equivalent to 3 A Levels and a Level 3 Extended Certificate is equivalent to 2 A Levels, the Certificate or a Diploma will allow you to enter the world of work or Higher Education. Many engineers who gain this qualification go on to university and read for a BSc in Engineering. All units are assessed and graded and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded. The pattern of attendance is 4 full days per week.The course is made up of 4 core and 8 specialist units. The specialist units enable you to study particular areas in depth and there is opportunity to follow various pathways. The pathways and units are categorised below.The Mandatory Units you will study include:- Operation of vehicle chassis systems- Vehicle engine principles, operation, service and repair- Vehicle system fault diagnosis and rectification- Vehicle projectYou will have the opportunity to study Specialist units from the following:- Application of vehicle science and mathematics- Electrical and electronic principles for vehicle technology- Vehicle electrical charging and starting systems- Function and operation of vehicle petrol injection systems- Diesel fuel injection systems for compression ignition engines- Operation and testing of vehicle electronic ignition systems- Vehicle management systems- Operation and maintenance of light vehicle transmission systems- Vehicle electronic ancillary and information systems- Light vehicle suspension, steering and braking systems- Heavy vehicle braking systems- Mathematics for engineering technicians- Welding technologyFunctional Skills to be taken:Common skills are to be generated through coursework, activities and written assignments.

Course content

The course is aimed at those who wish to either gain entry to Higher Education or those who wish to develop their practical skills to enable them to work in industry.

Entry requirements

GCSEs at Grade A*- B in English Language and Maths plus two further GCSEs including Science at Grade A* - C or IMI Level 2 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair and GCSE English Language at Grade A*-B and GCSE Maths at Grade A* - C or Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths

Assessment

All units are assessed and graded and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded.

Future opportunities

After successfully completing this course you can progress onto a Higher National Certificate, University or employment.

At your interview you will be provided with a preferred Kit List that will assist you during your course. This kit will always belong to you and is fully transferable to take with you in to employment.
