Music Technology Level 3 Diploma at West Herts College

Course description

Music and sound shape our lives through TV and film, on the radio or in computer games. Equally diverse is the range of careers within this huge industry.

This practical, hands-on programme is specifically designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to the application of technology across many musical styles. As well as developing a thorough understanding of the music industry, you’ll be building skills across music, recording and computer applications to music.

Course content

Experienced lecturers and technicians will share their knowledge with you. You will spend lots of time in our purpose built sound studios, where you’ll study a vast array of topics including:

  • Basic keyboard skills

  • Understanding, creating and designing sounds

  • The theory of sound

  • Using recording studios

  • Music production techniques

  • How to put on shows using live sound and PA equipment

  • Sound for moving image

Visits to universities and trade shows will expand your awareness. You’ll be expected to develop your professional practice, liaising with local music providers and venues. Alongside your course you’ll study English and maths with our GEM programme and complete GAP work experience to develop skills and confidence whether you’re next step is working life or university.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs (A*-C) including English or maths, or Level 2 Diploma in music. You will be invited to showcase your talents to our course tutors, and will also be required to attend a course introduction meeting.

Future opportunities

Options for further study include: HND Music at College, BA(Hons) Popular Music and Recording, HND Sound Recording or HND/BA Music Technology. You could be ready to find work straightaway as: a record producer or studio engineer; a sound engineer for radio stations or TV programmes; in technical support for live shows and large events. You could earn money from writing music or designing sound effects or you could work in music education.
