Course content

The purpose of Psychology is to provide an insight into the functioning of the mind, and to provide a basis for the understanding of human behaviour. AS level – Year 12 Unit 1:         Memory, forgetting and eyewitness testimony.Early socialisation and attachment.Unit 2:         Stress and stress management.Psychological abnormality.Unit 3:          Social Influence.Research methods in psychology. A2 level – Year 13 Unit 4:         Options available for study include:-Relationships; Sleep and Dreaming;Social and Personal Development;Pro and Anti Social Behaviour; Evolutionary Theories of Behaviour.        Unit 5:         Psychopathology and treatments for mental disorders.Issues and debates in Psychology.Unit 6:         Coursework – (One piece of psychological research)

Entry requirements

Previous experience of Psychology is not necessary in order to study this subject at AS & A2 Level, however, as with all A Levels a minimum of 5 GCSE passes, or equivalent, at C and above will be required, as will a willingness to learn.


Student performance and progression in Psychology is regularly assessed and monitored via homework, research projects, and timed tests.

Future opportunities

Most if not all professions require a certain amount of Psychological knowledge, and therefore involve a certain amount of Psychological training. An AS Level and/or an A Level in Psychology will be a definite advantage in this respect, and, you will learn a lot about yourself in the process. Psychology will allow you to open up your mind, and allow you to better understand the minds of others.

Psychology is taught via a combination of lectures, videos, investigative research, discussions, debates, practical demonstrations and introspection.
