Public Services BTEC Level 2 First Diploma at West Herts College

Course description

If you have aspirations to join the armed forces or emergency services then this course is right for you. It offers an insight into working life across the services before applying for employment in a particular area.

You’ll learn how different services operate, taking part in a number of activity projects to develop your skills and confidence. Our tutors bring a wealth of experience from their time in the police force, the armed services, the navy and other uniformed services.

Course content

Professionals in the uniformed services need to be fit and this is reflected in the focus of the course, which features many physical and outdoor activities as well as classroom-based projects.

Key subject areas include:

  • Uniformed public services employment and skills

  • Adventurous outdoor activities such as climbing and caving

  • Land navigation by map and compass

  • Crime and its effects

  • Preparing to respond to emergency incidents

  • Health, fitness and lifestyle

  • Volunteering

Visits to Watford fire station examine all key aspects of the service from command and control procedures to rescue practice in a smoke room and a live hose run competition. Central to it all is team working and communication skills.

Alongside these specific aspects of your course you’ll study English and maths and take part in GAP work placement to develop your skills and get you ready for employment.

Entry requirements

3 GCSEs (A*-D) or successful completion of Level 1 programme. You will also be required to attend a course introduction meeting.

Future opportunities

You can progress to the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Public Services. With further study and training you will be able to progress to a career in the public and emergency services.
