Course description

Sociologists are interested in every area of society. Sociology helps us to understand why people behave as they do and the effects that behaviour has on the rest of us. Sociologists are involved in every area of society, helping to guide people who make decisions to make the BEST decisions.

Course content

You'll study 3 modules which will lead to 2 exams; In term 1 we study the family and in term 2 we study education. Over both terms, students will carry out sociological research and study sociological methods.

Entry requirements

At least 5 Level 2 qualifications at grades A*- C or equivalent, preferably including English and a level 2 social science such as history, sociology or geography.Students will need to have good language and literacy skills as the subject contains a considerable amount of technical vocabulary.


Assessment Students sit 2 exams in their AS year, one in January and the second in May.

Future opportunities

Progression Routes

Most AS sociology students go on to study the A2 and then to university to study subjects such as sociology, politics, law, media and social policy. Sociology forms a good grounding for almost any subject that requires a detailed knowledge of the 'real world' and sociology students are taught to develop an analytical approach which is useful in almost any career area that requires the analysis of detailed and complex information.
