Applied Science at Trinity Academy

Course description

This course incorporates elements of applied Biology, Chemistry and Physics, culminating in an AS qualification at the end of the first year and A2 at the end of the second year. The programme of study includes three units of work in each year.

Course content

At AS you will cover the following:
 Investigating Science at work
 Energy transfer systems
 Finding out about substances.
In addition, to be awarded the full advanced level qualification, three further A2 units will be studied in Year 13. These are selected to provide a balanced curriculum.
 
At A2 you will cover the following:
 Planning and carrying out a scientific investigation
 Medical Physics
 Ecology, conservation and recycling.
Each unit is assessed either by examination or by an internally assessed portfolio assignment. Unit 2 at AS and Unit 8 at A2 are externally examined, whilst the remaining four units are assessed by portfolio assignments.

Entry requirements

Students are required to hold at least 5A* - C grades including Maths and English. You should achieve at least a C grade in GCSE or Distinction* in BTEC Science.

A/AS level Applied Science provides a unique opportunity for students to continue their study of all the sciences to advanced level whilst leaving freedom of choice in other areas of the curriculum. The subject also complements and enhances understanding of many other subjects such as Health and Social Care, Sports Studies, Geography and Business.
 
The specifications are based on what scientists actually do, providing an insight into their jobs as well as offering a challenging and rewarding academic programme. The course requires commitment and the ability to set targets in order to meet coursework deadlines. It provides the academic qualifications needed for entry to higher education and equips students with the skills required for further studies or employment.
