Business and Enterprise Level 1 (BUS1) at Barnsley College

Course description

This qualification is designed for learners who want an introduction to business and enterprise that includes a vocational and hands-on element. It has been developed to enthuse and inspire learners about a career in business and enterprise. The qualification will appeal to learners who wish to either set up their own business, move into employment or progress onto further study.

Course content

The Business and Enterprise qualification will offer opportunities to develop business skills demanded by employers in the UK today. The qualification will enhance your readiness for the world of work by developing transferable skills such as planning, research and analysis, working with others and effective communication. There will be a period of work placement and you will also undertake English and maths if you do not have these at grade 4 or above.

This course is designed to provide you with the skills and knowledge needed to work successfully in business and commercial sector and/or to progress onto a Level 2 course. You will study 4 units:

•Introduction to Business and Enterprise •Marketing for Business and Enterprise •Finance for Business and Enterprise •Planning for Business and Enterprise

Entry requirements

Two GCSEs at grade 9/A* to 2/E. It is desirable that you have English and maths at grade 3 or above but this is not essential as English and maths will be delivered as part of the programme.

Assessment

Assessment is internal and through a portfolio of evidence which demonstrates achievement of all the learning outcomes and assessment criteria associated with each unit. The qualifications will assess the application of business skills through their practical use, and an understanding of business and enterprise through both practical and knowledge-based activities

Financial information

Financial support

If your total annual household income is less than £35,000 you could be eligible for financial support through our Learner Support Fund for travel (up to £700), if your household income is below £20,000 you could be eligible for food, trips, printing, equipment and childcare. You don’t have to pay this money back.

You can pick up a Learner Support Fund application form from Student Services on the ground floor at the Old Mill Lane campus.

Guaranteed bursaries

If you are aged between 16 and 18 and currently living on your own, in care or leaving care, you could be eligible for a non-repayable bursary of up to £1,200 per year.*

Food

FREE bus services!

We realise that getting to and from college might not be very easy for everyone so we have funded four free return bus services for our students. They go to and from the Old Mill Lane campus which is just a few minutes’ walk from our Sixth Form college campus.

Shelley > Old Mill Lane campus

Stocksbridge via Penistone > Old Mill Lane campus

South Elmsall via South Kirby, Hemsworth, Kinsley, Fitzwilliam and Ryhill > Old Mill Lane campus

Rotherham via Ecclesfield and Chapeltown > Old Mill Lane campus

These bus routes are completely free for our students and operate on a first come, first served basis. Each route operates to ensure students get to college before lessons start and a return service is provided after lessons finish. Future opportunities

The course will prepare you for progression into further study at Level 2. Learners who achieve this qualification could progress to: •Level 2 Event Planning •Level 2 Certificate in Business or into an apprenticeship including: •Apprenticeship in Business Administration •Apprenticeship in Customer Service or employment including: •Customer service representative •Administrative staff
