Art and Design A-Level at The Ockendon Academy & Studio School

Course description

We develop students’ skills through four broad aims.




Course content

· Intellectual, imaginative, creative and intuitive powers;

· Investigative, analytical, practical and expressive skills, aesthetic understanding and critical judgement;

· Understanding of contexts and inter-relationships between art, craft and design;

· Knowledge of art, craft and design in contemporary society and in other times and cultures.

Practical work forms the majority of the curriculum, with critical studies and the appreciation of artists. Students will evaluate and discuss their own work and others’.


Entry requirements

GCSE Art grade B or above.



Completion of two coursework units in Year 12 looking at developing skills and knowledge of the arts.

60% coursework unit and 40% examination unit in Year 13.

An 8-10 week project will be set by the examination board that culminates in a timed 15-hour examination.


Future opportunities

This course provides an excellent foundation for both a career and further education in the arts.
