French A Level at Matravers School

Course description

French combines well with other subjects. It is a respected and valued qualification with excellent career prospects. It is a transferable skill which is relevant to the workplace and in further education and is delivered via a range of modern technology. The course is for students who gain a grade B or above at GCSE. You will learn to discuss, in French, issues relevant to young people (eg future career plans, relationships and other social issues) and be able to write in French, logically and with conviction. You will learn about French culture and the way of life. New skills will be acquired such as translating from and into French. The course is taught using interactive resources which complement the course books and which can be accessed by students at home for independent study. These interactive resources include listening and video materials, grammar explanations and tasks as well as advice on developing the linguistic skills needed for success at Advanced Level.

Future opportunities

Many students go on to study languages at University but also to Higher Education courses that combine languages with other disciplines such as Tourism, Business, Law, Engineering and Science.

French can be combined with other areas, such as Finance, Marketing, Tourism and ICT which will enable you to be well prepared and confident about your prospects in an increasingly global workplace.

There are career opportunities in Travel/Tourism, Marketing, Journalism, Business Administration, International Law, Teaching, Interpreting & Translation, the Civil Service and working for multinational blue chip companies.
