Performance Skills Using Acting Certificate Level 1 at The Manchester College

Course description

If you’ve always been interested in acting and have a passion for performance, but don’t have any previous experience and aren’t sure where to begin, then this Level 1 Certificate in Performance Skills Using Acting is the perfect course for you. Over the course of twenty weeks, you’ll study a wide variety of acting skills and drama techniques, exploring performances and developing a good understanding of the role of the actor. You’ll complete a number of different units that include developing your techniques for performance, and how to rehearse effectively and then perform. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to work within a team/company, and will have a good, solid basis of acting skills and techniques which you can continue to build upon.

Entry requirements

There are no formal qualifications needed to apply for this Level 1 Certificate in Performance Skills Using Acting. Before you enrol, we will invite you to take part in a small interview with us.


Assessment for this course will be largely made up of practical evidence, including demonstrations of your skills and recordings of both rehearsals and performances. You will also complete some worksheets and an interview as part of your portfolio.

Future opportunities

When you have completed this Level 1 Acting and Performance Certificate, you’ll have the foundations you need to develop your skills and techniques further with us. You can advance onto the Level 2 Diploma in Performing Arts (Drama) at The Manchester College, before going on to the Level 3 BTEC in Performing Arts (Acting). Throughout these courses, you’ll have the chance to explore a whole range of careers within the performing arts industry, and be able to hone your skills, knowledge and experience to the areas which interest you most. You’ll then be able to following an exciting career in this sector, or advance onto higher, degree-level courses.

    • Shena Simon Campus is a vibrant sixth form centre in the heart of Manchester. The campus offers a full range of A levels and is well known for its excellent performing arts and music courses. It has industry standard media facilities and two theatres.

      Performances at the Waterside Theatre and Sackville Theatre are open to the public and are advertised on our events page.

      Local area

      Shena Simon Campus is a Grade II listed building in a lively and beautiful part of the city centre. Whitworth Gardens, also known as Sackville Park, is a leafy urban oasis next to the campus. Shena Simon is surrounded by university buildings, giving 16-18 year olds a window into student life. The streets around the campus have lots of interesting architecture in the ornate style of the textile industry.

      Manchester’s central bus station and Piccadilly and Oxford Road train stations are a few minutes’ walk from the campus. The National Express coach station is just around the corner.

      Shena Simon has the benefit of all the city centre’s attractions. It is particularly close to Chinatown and the Cornerhouse gallery and arts cinema.
